Oriana is a a rhetoric and composition Ph.D. candidate in Georgia State University’s English Department and a 2CI New & Emerging Media fellow. Her research interests include Visual Culture/Rhetoric, Postmodern and Postcolonial Feminist Theory, Comic Book Studies, Critical Pedagogy, New Media, and University Writing Program Administration, and her dissertation project addresses the visual rhetorical construction of ideology in comics.

Oriana also holds a Master’s degree in Women’s Studies, and working at the intersection of new media, visual rhetoric, and contemporary theory for her thesis, drew connections among the print practice of journal writing, blogging, self-help culture, and gender construction to argue that the identities afforded by blogging represent acts of self-remediation.

Additionally, Oriana’s pedagogical approach to teaching composition is grounded in the rhetorical analysis of ideology as it functions in print and digital genres of popular culture, as well as the expectation that students will move from passive consumption, to critique, to the conscious production of print and digital media designed to reflect their own ideological perspectives.

As a 2CINEM fellow, she has become assistant editor on the “Reading the World of Big Data” special issue of the Annals of Scholarship, and helped develop the digital pedagogy and educational gaming projects.
