Professor Johnson's research interests include technical communication theory and history, rhetoric history, and usability research. His book, User-centered Technology: A Rhetorical Theory for Computers and Other Mundane Artifacts, was awarded the 1999 Best Book Award from the National Council of Teachers of English for Publications in Technical and Scientific Communication. He is currently working on a book titled Romancing the Atom: Vignettes of the Atomic Mindset from the Radium Girls to Nuclear Green. In addition, he has coordinated the Michigan Tech Department of Humanities Preparing Future Faculty Initiative, one of six humanities graduate programs in the country chosen to develop innovative approaches for the preparation of graduate students to meet the demand of the ever-changing academic environment. He has consulted with a number of corporations, including Microsoft, Lenscrafters, and General Foods.
