Duplicate entries

Forums:

Even after searching the list of institutions, I noticed that multiple nodes for certain institutions appear when creating relationships between people and places. Why is this happening and which node should I choose when this occurs?

Though we do our best to search for people and places, duplication will occur occasionally; when it does, post a reply here and an admin will combine the entries. We'll also do our best to sweep the alphabetical listings periodically to catch and fix the problem.

But in the meantime, some strategies:

  1. When searching, try a few different versions of the name: e.g. if LSU returns nothing, maybe Louisiana will do the trick.
  2. If the alternate name does help -- or if you're adding a new entry -- consider editing the title to include both versions, with one in parentheses. That should help future searchers.
  3. In general, a lower node-number means an older entry; if duplicates come up in your auto-complete when using the Add Relationship box, the simplest solution is to go with the one that has the lower number.
  4. If you do see a duplicate entry, please let us know by posting a reply to this forum thread. Only admins can delete entries, and before we do so we'll make sure to merge all the existing information into one place.

Thanks for the question!

While adding my connections, I saw that my school, Miami University, has two entries. Can you combine them? Thanks!

Dom,

This is an error that should be prevented by the auto-complete function in the entry fields, however we know that this is not fool proof. Through the descriptions on this site we encourage users to check the lists before attempting to add a new person or place to help avoid duplication as well. That said, we will work to address these instances as they arise, and we thank you for bringing them to our attention.

Is there a way to list a co-author as a relation on one person's profile without having that individual also show up again as their own co-author? (That seemed to happen when I entered Bruce Horner as a "co-author" of John Trimbur. See Trimbur's profile.)

This duplication is a known bug, reported to the maintainers of the Relation module, but with no fix thus far. It seems to be a function of the fact that it's a non-directed relation (i.e. no one is exclusively "source" or "target"), so the algorithm that generates the View -- the list of names -- gets confused and doesn't know who to leave out. Basically, it queries the relation for endpoints, then circles back and gives *all* the endpoints, including the starting point. And this is true for each collaborative relationship created, thus the further repetitions of the name of the "source" person (whose page you're viewing).

For now, we'll just have to live with the duplication, as it's still the best way to see the rest of the collaborative relationships. More updates will be posted as they become available.

I see duplicate entries for Janice Lauer. Will you please merge those?

Thanks for letting us know! It's fixed now, and all the relations from the duplicate entry have been merged over to the original.

Best,
Ben Miller
